Are Low Dose Asbestos Exposure Studies Unreliable?

چکیده
These three articles, based upon casecontrol epidemiology, have formed the principal support for the theory that very low exposures to asbestos will in fact multiply the risk for, and thereby increase the incidence of mesothelioma. In each of these studies, one or more industrial hygiene experts, blinded to the purpose of their work, reviewed data about patients with a confirmed diagnosis of mesothelioma. Such data includes work histories, employment data, and answers to questionnaires. The hygienists then determined the likely exposure suffered by such patients. Matched controls were then selected and a similar process was completed for the matched controls, yielding the following results:

Comparing epidemiologic studies of ingested asbestos for use in risk assessment.
Epidemiologic data can be used in risk assessment in various ways: to calculate the dose-response relationship between exposure levels and adverse effects; to establish ranges of exposure known to be safe or unsafe; to verify an endpoint in humans derived from a route or species extrapolation; to support assumptions necessary for performing extrapolation procedures. These points are illustrated...
متن کاملExposure to asbestos and the risk of gastrointestinal cancer: a reassessment.
In 1964 it was first reported that asbestos workers had a higher risk of gastrointestinal cancer. This notion has persisted despite several studies that have found no increased risk. The risks of gastrointestinal cancer to workers exposed to asbestos were reassessed, based on the results of published studies on 32 independent cohorts of asbestos workers. Not all studies provided risk estimates ...
متن کاملToward Making Epidemiologic Data More Useful for Quantitative Risk Assessment
This paper discusses issues faced in using epidemiologic data to develop quantitative estimates of risk from specified patterns of exposure to a toxicant. We focus on use of data from cohort studies with binary endpoints (occurrence or non-occurrence of disease). Relative advantages of Cox regression and Poisson regression are presented. A general form of exposure metric is presented, and crite...
متن کاملFerruginous bodies and pulmonary fibrosis in dead low to moderately exposed asbestos cement workers: histological examination.
Histological slides from the lungs of 89 dead asbestos cement workers have been examined with respect to ferruginous bodies and fibrosis. The results have been compared with individually matched controls with no known exposure to asbestos, and related to asbestos exposure, expressed as duration of exposure and cumulative asbestos dose, and smoking habits. The asbestos cement workers studied had...
متن کاملOccupational Exposure to Diesel Motor Exhaust and Lung Cancer: A Dose-Response Relationship Hidden by Asbestos Exposure Adjustment? The ICARE Study
Background. In a French large population-based case-control study we investigated the dose-response relationship between lung cancer and occupational exposure to diesel motor exhaust (DME), taking into account asbestos exposure. Methods. Exposure to DME was assessed by questionnaire. Asbestos was taken into account through a global indicator of exposure to occupational carcinogens or by a speci...
